The Uganda Cubs secured their place as regional champions after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Tanzania in the final of the CECAFA U-17 Zonal Qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The match, played on Friday at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, showcased resilience and determination as Uganda came from a goal down to claim the title.

The Journey to the Final

Uganda’s road to the final was marked by impressive performances.

The Cubs earned their ticket to the 2025 U-17 AFCON in Morocco after a commanding 4-1 victory over Somalia in the semifinals.

That win not only secured qualification but also set up a thrilling finale against arch-rivals Tanzania.

The Final: A Tale of Two Halves

Tanzania started the final with intent and were rewarded in the 11th minute when Samson Abel Josiah opened the scoring.

Despite trailing, Uganda held their ground and kept the scoreline manageable heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Cubs turned up the heat.

Arafat Nkoola equalized in the 63rd minute, injecting life into the home crowd at Hamz Stadium.

The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when James Bogere struck the winner, completing the comeback and sealing the championship for Uganda.

Individual Brilliance

James Bogere’s late winner capped off an exceptional tournament for the forward, who finished as the tournament’s top scorer with seven goals.

His consistent performances were a key factor in Uganda’s success.

Bogere’s compatriot Walusimbi Abubaker was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), while Tanzania’s Abdulrahman Nassoro earned the accolade for Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Looking Ahead to AFCON 2025

Both Uganda and Tanzania will represent the CECAFA region at the U-17 AFCON scheduled for March 30 to April 11, 2025, in Morocco.

The Cubs will look to build on their regional success as they aim for continental glory.

The victory not only highlights the Cubs’ talent and teamwork but also underscores Uganda’s rising prominence in youth football.

The comeback against Tanzania serves as a testament to their resilience and potential as they head to AFCON 2025.
