The women’s national basketball team, the Gazelles, yesterday started training at the Lugogo arena ahead of the FIBA Zone V qualifiers due 3-8 February in Cairo, Egypt.
The session was led by new head coach Nicholas Natuhereza who took over from Goran Lojo this week with 10 of the 15 summoned players in attendance.
With a blend of experienced and young talent, Natuhereza believes the squad is set for the target ahead.
“It’s an honor to lead the Gazelles and represent the country. We want to build on what we did in 2023. Some of the girls are rusty coming from the break but we want to keep improving,” he said.
Captained by forward Jane Asinde, the side features Hope Akello, Paige Robinson, Shakira Nanvubya, Perus Nyamwenge, Sheila Lamunu, Maxine Anyango, Jamilah Nansikombi, Agatha Kamwada, Zoe Atek, Sarah Namale, Mellisa Akullo, Sharon Kirabo, Becky Longom and Claire Lamunu.
“We have tried to bridge the gap between the U18 and senior team to give the young players experience and motivation to grow,” Natuhereza noted.
Focus was on fitness, ball work and team combinations in today’s session. The Gazelles finished seventh at the 2023 edition in Kigali and will need to reach the final to stand a chance of qualification.
