Mutesi Nasiimu: The Triple-Threat Star Redefining Ugandan Women’s Sports

When Uganda’s netball activities stalled for two years, many players faced career uncertainty. But for Mutesi Nasiimu, the disruption became an unlikely catalyst—ushering in a new chapter that has seen her emerge as one of the country’s most versatile and accomplished athletes.

Currently pursuing a master’s degree in Marketing at Victoria University, Mutesi is a player for NIC Netball Club and also represents Victoria University in handball.

Far from allowing the netball pause to derail her progress, she embraced the opportunity to expand her sporting horizons—venturing into handball and basketball, where she now competes at a high level.

“Balancing three sports has become manageable to me since the physical similarities between the sports are just the same,” Mutesi explained, highlighting the adaptability that has made her a standout across disciplines.

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. Mutesi has secured a rare double selection to Uganda’s national teams in both netball and handball—a testament to her athletic ability and mental resilience.

Still, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Some coaches have expressed concern over her multi-sport schedule, questioning the sustainability of her commitments.

But Mutesi remains undeterred, focused on her passion and determined to maintain her performance across all fronts.

Her story underscores the idea that versatility is not a compromise but a competitive edge.

While many athletes are encouraged to specialize, Mutesi is breaking that convention—thriving across three sports and serving as an inspiration for aspiring athletes nationwide.
