Mike Mutyaba Resigns as Assistant Coach Due to Witchcraft Concerns and Player Tardiness

Former Uganda Cranes and KCCA FC midfielder Mike Mutyaba has resigned from his position as the assistant coach of the Masaza team, Buddu. This decision comes amid concerns about the prevalence of witchcraft beliefs, just two weeks before their crucial match against Kyadondo in the first leg of the Masaza Cup quarter-finals.

In an interview with CBS FM, Mutyaba explained that his religious beliefs, as a Muslim, compelled him to distance himself from an environment where witchcraft was taken seriously. He stated, “I chose to step down from Buddu because witchcraft was a prevalent issue. Personally, I adhere to the Islamic faith and do not engage with witchcraft practices. This principle led to my departure from TP Mazembe as well. It was more suitable for me to resign and allow those who are deeply involved in witchcraft to manage the team.”

Mutyaba also cited the habitual tardiness of players during training camps as another contributing factor to his decision. He expressed his disappointment, saying, “As a professional coach, it was disheartening to witness players consistently arriving late for training. Some players would even show up on a Saturday when we had a match scheduled for the following Sunday.”

It’s worth noting that Mike Mutyaba retired from professional football in 2020 due to a heart condition. Additionally, in 2021, he was subjected to physical assault and arrest after participating in a non-violent protest at the FUFA House in Mengo, Kampala, where he peacefully demonstrated against the administration of the FUFA President, Moses Magogo.
