Former Rugby Cranes captain Michael Wokorach says the State of Ugandan Sport symposium is a vital platform for pushing key conversations that can drive sports development in the country.
Wokorach was among several stakeholders—including coaches, administrators, athletes, and members of the media—who attended the opening day of the two-day event at Next Media Park. He emphasized the importance of such forums in sparking meaningful discussions.
“This kind of platform opens the eyes of different stakeholders. Everyone around the world is watching, so it gives us the chance to share our views and talk about how the sector is growing,” Wokorach said.
The symposium is focused on sustainable development, with input from a broad range of players across Uganda’s sports ecosystem. It comes at a time when the sector is undergoing major changes, including improved infrastructure and the hosting of top continental tournaments.
Wokorach believes Uganda is on the right path but says more needs to be done to keep the momentum going.
“There’s still work to do, especially with infrastructure and grassroots development to bring in more talent. Rugby is doing well with the junior teams—we’re seeing good performances and a solid development cycle,” he added.
The symposium continues today, with a focus on the next steps needed to strengthen sports development across the country.
