France’s chance to secure an early spot at the 2026 World Cup was delayed Monday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Iceland in Reykjavik.
Les Bleus were stunned when Victor Pálsson put Iceland ahead in the 39th minute.
France fought back in the second half with goals from Christopher Nkunku (63′) and a first international strike from Jean-Philippe Mateta (68′), who was making his first start.
However, substitute Kristian Hlynsson equalised for Iceland just two minutes later (70′), denying France the victory they needed.
France remains three points clear at the top of Group D. They can now secure qualification when they face second-placed Ukraine on November 13.
