Uganda’s national rugby sevens head coach, Tolbert Onyango has named the squad that will represent Uganda at the World Cup Rugby HSBC 7’s Challenger in Montevideo. The tournament is set to take place from March 8 to March 10, 2024.
Speaking to NBS Sport earlier today, Coach Onyango expressed his optimism about the team’s performance.
“We’ve learned valuable lessons from our previous outing in the Dubai leg,” he said. “Our focus now is on executing our game plan effectively and making our mark on the international stage.”
Uganda is drawn into Pool C, alongside Uruguay, Germany, and Papua New Guinea with the Rugby 7s having already faced Germany in the World Cup Rugby HSBC 7’s Challenger Dubai Leg, where they finished ninth.
Coach Onyango expects a significant improvement this time around. “We’re better prepared, mentally and physically,” he emphasized. “Our goal is to compete fiercely and secure a higher position in Montevideo.”
Vice Captain Adrian Kasito, who was instrumental in the Dubai leg, echoed the team’s determination. “We’ve analyzed our strengths and weaknesses,” Kasito stated. “Now it’s time to showcase our skills and make Uganda proud.”
Norbert Okenyi returns to the team after missing the Dubai series due to an injury scare while France-based Philip Wokorach is also in the team after last featuring in Zimbabwe at the Africa Rugby Men’s Cup last year, where Uganda finished 3rd.
