Mugisha Retained as FEASSA President as New Roles Introduced

The Federation of East Africa Schools’ Sports Associations has elected a new Executive Committee at the end of its four-year cycle, following a hybrid meeting held in Kampala on April 13.

The elections, hosted by the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association at GNS Plaza, combined physical and virtual participation, with officials from across the region taking part.

Justus Mugisha was retained as president, while David Ngugi kept his position as secretary general. The new structure also introduces additional roles aimed at strengthening governance and operations within the regional body.

Among the new appointments, Maurice Okumu comes in as vice secretary general, Luke Karemangingo takes up the newly created vice president for welfare role, and Ayub Khalifa is named organising secretary. Gekonyo Kariuki assumes the redefined vice president technical position, while Deo Lugayila Joseph transitions into vice president administration after previously serving as publicity secretary.

Patrick Okanya remains treasurer and Othieno Denis continues as publicity secretary.

The committee also includes regional representatives, with Father Gatete Innocent for Rwanda, Anitah Alex Mlay for Tanzania, Kipchumba Maiyo for Kenya, and Apolot Margaret Harriet for Uganda. Positions for Burundi and South Sudan are yet to be filled and will be completed through an adoption process.

Speaking after the elections, FEASSA leadership reaffirmed their commitment to growing school sports across East Africa, focusing on stronger collaboration, standardised competitions, and increased investment in youth development.

“The successful conduct of the hybrid meeting underscores FEASSA’s commitment to inclusivity and adaptability, enabling wider participation from member states despite geographical constraints,” the statement read.

The meeting also highlighted the organisation’s shift toward more flexible governance structures, with some officials, including vice president administration Deo Lugayila Joseph, participating virtually.

FEASSA remains the regional body responsible for coordinating and promoting school sports across East Africa.
