Muteesa I Royal University have reached the University Football League final for the first time after defeating St Lawrence University in the semi-finals of the 2025–26 season.
The Masaka-based side, competing in only their second UFL campaign, secured a historic breakthrough with a composed performance, driven by captain Lutwama Ali’s influence in midfield.
The first-year student, who recently completed senior six at Kijjabwemi Secondary School and is pursuing a diploma in Art and Design, has emerged as a central figure in the team’s run. Lutwama has featured in eight matches, scoring four goals and providing five assists, placing him among the leading contenders for the competition’s Most Valuable Player award.
Speaking after the semi-final victory, Lutwama pointed to belief within the squad as a decisive factor.
“As players, we set targets and pushed ourselves to make history. At one point, we told ourselves we are playing for ourselves, not just the university, and that gave us extra motivation,” he said.
He also credited former Tonny Mawejje for influencing his mindset and encouraging him to take responsibility within the team.
Sports manager Ambrose Kalibala said lessons from last season’s campaign were key to the team’s improvement.
“Last season, we lacked experience and it cost us, especially with the away goals rule against Bugema. This time, we understood the competition better and built a more balanced squad,” Kalibala explained.
Kalibala added that guidance from former Uganda Cranes players, including Tonny Mawejje and Vincent Kayizzi, helped raise the squad’s confidence during the campaign.
Muteesa I Royal University will face YMCA in the final scheduled for May 2, with the venue yet to be confirmed. Hamz Stadium Nakivubo is among the expected hosts.
In the third-place playoff, two-time champions Kampala University will take on St Lawrence University.
