The Ugandan political landscape and sports fraternity are mourning the sudden passing of Hon. Nakimuli Helen, District Woman Representative for Kalangala, who died on Sunday, April 19.
To many, she was a dedicated legislator and voice for the islands, earning the name “The Pearl of Kalangala.” Beyond Parliament, she was a titan of Ugandan sport—an athlete who mastered the court as skilfully as she navigated policy.
A Life of Sports and Service
Hon. Nakimuli embodied spirited leadership. While her professional life was devoted to the people of Kalangala, her passion for sport was unmatched. She excelled in netball, basketball, and volleyball.
In 2023, during interactions on X (formerly Twitter), she spoke of her admiration for international volleyball icon Gabrielle Reece, reflecting her deep appreciation for the game.
Appearing on NBS Sport’s Inside Sports programme the same year, she reiterated her love for volleyball, citing Reece as her inspiration and naming the She Cranes as her favourite local team.

The Heart of COBAP Volleyball Club
Her most significant sporting contribution was to COBAP Volleyball Club. As President, she was a hands-on leader who often joined her team on court. Under her guidance, COBAP became more than a club—it was a vehicle for community building and youth empowerment. Her transition from player to leader inspired many young women to break barriers in sport and governance.
A Call for Solidarity: The “Women in Football” Legacy
Nakimuli’s leadership extended beyond volleyball. At the Women in Football Bonanza on 29 November 2023, she delivered a powerful message that defined her legacy.
“Some of the women occupying positions shouldn’t pull each other down. They should instead look at each other as sisters.”
She urged women in leadership to embrace collaboration over competition, referencing the Uganda Netball Federation saga. For Nakimuli, unity was not optional—it was essential. She championed sisterhood, mutual respect, and collective progress, values she practised daily.

A Legacy of Versatility and Unity
Balancing legislative duties with competitive sport is rare. Nakimuli managed it with grace:
– In Parliament: She was deeply rooted in her community and a steadfast advocate for Kalangala and national issues.
– On the court: Whether in netball, basketball, or volleyball, she played with competitive fire that earned respect from teammates and opponents alike.
– In leadership: She was the big sister of Ugandan sport, always lifting others.
The loss of Helen Nakimuli leaves a void from the halls of Parliament to the volleyball courts she cherished. She proved one could be a fierce competitor and a compassionate leader simultaneously.
As we bid farewell to a friend, leader, and true sportswoman, we celebrate a life lived with purpose. Her legacy endures through the players she mentored at COBAP, the women she empowered in football, and the lives she touched in public service.
Rest in Peace, Hon. Nakimuli Helen. You played a great game, and your impact remains undefeated.
