The chairman of the Uganda Professional Golfers Association, Davis Kato, has described the newly launched MTN Pro-Tee Series as a major step forward for professional golf in Uganda, saying it provides the structured competition platform that players have long needed to develop and earn from the sport.
Kato was speaking after MTN Uganda and Entebbe Club unveiled the MTN Pro-Tee Series, a new professional golf circuit designed to strengthen Uganda’s competitive golf ecosystem and create more opportunities for elite golfers.
According to Kato, professional golf in Uganda has made significant progress in recent years, with membership of the Uganda Professional Golfers Association growing from 29 professionals in 2022 to 62 today. However, he noted that the absence of a structured competition calendar has remained a major challenge.
“The MTN Pro-Tee Series is a game-changer for professional golf in Uganda,” Kato said.
“As an association, we have worked hard to grow the professional game, increasing our membership from 29 professionals in 2022 to 62 today. What has been missing is a structured platform that gives players consistent opportunities to compete, earn and develop.”
He said the new series would help elevate standards by introducing an international-standard tournament format, an Order of Merit ranking system and meaningful prize money that will reward consistent performances throughout the season.
“Through the MTN Pro-Tee Series, MTN Uganda is helping to raise the standard of professional golf by introducing an international-standard competition format, an Order of Merit and meaningful prize purses that motivate players to perform throughout the season,” Kato added.
“This partnership gives our professionals something to work towards and creates a stronger pathway for Ugandan golfers to compete successfully on bigger stages.”
The MTN Pro-Tee Series will feature 40 professional golfers competing over 72 holes, with points accumulated across multiple events during the season. Players will battle for the MTN Pro-Tee Order of Merit title, creating a season-long race among the country’s leading professionals.
The initiative marks MTN Uganda’s expansion from supporting amateur and corporate golf to investing directly in the professional game. The company has spent the past three years backing golf activities at Entebbe Club through the MTN Monthly Tee and MTN Grand Tee of Tees competitions.
Organisers say the new series is intended to provide a sustainable pathway for professional golfers while raising the overall standard of competition in Uganda.
The inaugural tournament is expected to launch at Entebbe Club, where Uganda’s top professionals will begin their quest to become the first MTN Pro-Tee champion.
