Uganda’s national men’s basketball team, the Silverbacks, have turned their attention to the third window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers after the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) named a 12-man squad to represent the country in Angola.
Head coach Mandy Juruni has assembled a balanced roster blending experience, athleticism, and youthful promise, with National Basketball League rising star Edrine Ekau earning his first call-up to the senior team.
Preparations will begin with a residential training camp in Kigali, Rwanda, running from June 20 to June 30. The team will then travel directly to Luanda, Angola, for the qualification window scheduled for July 2–5.
The Rwanda camp is expected to sharpen tactical discipline, physical conditioning, and team chemistry ahead of what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament.
“This window demands absolute focus. The ten days in Kigali will be instrumental in fine-tuning our execution. We have a group that understands the magnitude of representing Uganda on this stage, and the preparation will reflect that,” Juruni said.
Uganda faces a stern test against Africa’s basketball powerhouses, with the Silverbacks determined to advance to the next phase of qualification for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Juruni’s squad features a dynamic backcourt led by Nike Sibande Dejur Jr and Fayed Baale, while Ekau’s inclusion highlights the rise of young talent in Uganda’s basketball ranks.
On the wings, Robinson Odoch Opong, Marvin Musiime-Kamali, and Blessed Phillip Mbogo bring scoring ability and defensive versatility. Peter Obleng, Deng Geu John, and Emmanuel Womala add flexibility across multiple positions.
The frontcourt will be anchored by Jonathan Komagum, Titus Lual Odeke, and Joel Paul Kayiira, a trio expected to provide the physical presence and rebounding strength needed against some of the continent’s toughest opponents.
With preparations entering a decisive phase, the Silverbacks hope their Rwanda camp will provide the perfect platform for a successful qualification campaign in Luanda.
