Preview: Co-Hosts Canada Chase First World Cup Win Against Resilient Qatar

Canada will look to secure their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory when they welcome Qatar to Vancouver tomorrow early morning at 1 am, for a crucial Group B encounter between two nations searching for a breakthrough.

The co-hosts entered the tournament with high expectations but were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina after conceding an equaliser.

While the result fell short of expectations, it marked an important milestone as Canada finally secured their first World Cup point after six defeats across their previous two appearances.

Now they are chasing history again – a first tournament win, and Vancouver provides the perfect setting. Canada have been dominant at home recently, winning their last four matches in the city by an impressive aggregate score of 17-2.

A victory would also strengthen their path through Group B, with the group winners rewarded by playing their knockout-stage matches in Vancouver.

Qatar, meanwhile, arrive with renewed confidence after producing one of the opening round’s surprises by rescuing a late 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

It was their first-ever World Cup point, offering encouragement after a difficult run of seven matches without victory.

Despite that historic result, Julen Lopetegui’s side still need to improve in attack. Qatar have scored just once in their last four matches, with that goal coming via an own goal, highlighting their struggles in front of goal.

The only previous meeting between these sides came in 2022, when Canada won a friendly 2-0, and the co-hosts will hope to repeat that result as they aim to continue their impressive defensive form, having conceded more than once in only one of their last 17 internationals.

Cyle Larin will be central to Canada’s hopes after scoring the equaliser against Bosnia, while Qatar will look to defender Pedro Miguel, who scored in their last victory against the United Arab Emirates.

Alphonso Davies is expected to push for a return to the starting lineup after being carefully managed in the opening match, while Qatar have no major injury concerns.

A tight contest is expected, with Canada’s attacking talent facing a Qatar side likely to prioritise defensive organisation and discipline.
