Kitara’s Ssenyondo Downplays Title Hopes After Loss to NEC

Kitara FC’s aspirations for the Uganda Premier League title took a hit after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against NEC FC at the MTN Philip Omondi Stadium. Despite leading the league table with 44 points, Brian Ssenyondo, the head coach of Kitara FC, remains grounded about their title chances.

A 64th-minute Cromwel Rwothomio goal was enough to seal three points for Lugogo-based NEC. The result also meant that NEC are fourth in the standings, just 4 points behind Kitara.

In a post-match statement, Ssenyondo emphasized his focus on meeting the club’s targets rather than solely pursuing the league title.

He stated, “I’m here not for the Uganda Premier League title, I’m here to hit the club’s targets and we are on the right track but if we win it, that’s very good.”

Upon his appointment at the beginning of the season, Kitara FC unveiled Ssenyondo with a clear objective of securing a top 5 finish. Despite their current lead in the league standings, the coach remains cautious about raising expectations beyond the set goals.

Kitara’s position at the top of the table, four points ahead of second-placed SC Villa, appears promising. However, with two more games played than their closest rivals and three more matches than fifth-placed Vipers SC, maintaining their lead will require consistent performance in the remaining fixtures.

The upcoming fixtures against Vipers SC hold significant importance in the title race as Kitara are set to host Vipers in both the Uganda Cup and the Uganda Premier League, with these encounters potentially shaping the outcome of the championship.
