Zambia’s U-17 Women’s National Team Aims for World Cup Qualification, Draws Inspiration from Past Stars

As the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup 2024 third-round qualifiers loom closer, head coach Carol Kanyemba is rallying her troops, urging Zambia’s U-17 women’s national team to channel the spirit of past successes. In a recent interview with CAFOnline, Kanyemba emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the remarkable achievements of the previous U-17 generation, notably led by the sensational Barbra Banda, who spearheaded Zambia’s historic qualification for their maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup appearance.

The team is currently in the midst of preparations for their upcoming clash against Uganda, scheduled for Sunday, May 5th, on home turf. Zambia’s journey to this stage saw them secure a comfortable victory over Tanzania, while Uganda overcame the challenge posed by Cameroon to advance to the third round.

Despite the formidable opposition that lies ahead, Kanyemba remains steadfast in her belief in the team’s talent and potential. She asserts that Zambia has the requisite skills and determination to not only secure qualification but also compete effectively on the global stage.

A significant contributing factor to Zambia’s preparedness is the presence of active leagues, which have played a crucial role in maintaining the players’ fitness and form. With the squad arriving in optimal shape, the focus shifts to fine-tuning tactical strategies in anticipation of the upcoming qualifiers.

Kanyemba also commends the progress of women’s football in Zambia, attributing much of it to the flourishing domestic leagues. This development has not only bolstered the talent pool but also elevated the competitiveness of the sport within the country.

Looking ahead, the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place from October 16th to November 3rd, 2024, presents a golden opportunity for Zambia to make its mark on the global stage. With three African representatives vying for glory, the stage is set for Zambia’s U-17 women’s national team to etch their names in the annals of football history.
