Vipers Could Lose League Title to BUL Due to Rare FUFA Rule

The StarTimes Uganda Premier League season is heading towards an intriguing conclusion, and the fortunes of Vipers could hinge on a crucial FUFA rule regarding head-to-head results.

The reigning champions, have suffered two costly defeats to their title rivals, BUL, which could prove pivotal in the final standings. According to the 2023/24 FUFA Competitions Rules, in the event of teams being tied on points, the head-to-head record takes precedence over overall goal difference.

Rule 14(4)(c)(ii) of the FUFA Competition Rules states that “If Point Accumulation does not separate the teams, then the better team, between the tying teams, by the Head-to-Head (Using the goal aggregate system) will be ranked above the other(s).”

In the first leg at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, BUL emerged victorious with a 3-2 win, courtesy of goals from Nelson Mwere, Lawrence Tezikya, and Ibrahim Muguluusi. The second leg, played on May 1st at the newly-renovated Mandela National Stadium also went BUL’s way, with Jeromy Kirya scoring the decisive goal in the 26th minute.

Vipers and BUL are currently tied on 49 points, with the former having a superior goal of +21 compared to the latter’s +15 difference. The head-to-head record, however, is firmly in favor of BUL, who have beaten Vipers both home and away this season.

Both teams now have three games remaining, and the race for the league title could become even more intriguing. Vipers and BUL will both face Busoga United and Mbarara City in their final fixtures, setting up a potential showdown for the championship. The head-to-head record between the two teams could ultimately determine the champion should both Vipers and BUL end the season level on points.
