UPL Finale: It’s SC Villa’s Title to Lose

Sports Club Villa stands as Uganda’s most successful football club, boasting a storied legacy that spans over 45 years. Established in 1975 under the name Nakivubo Boys, the club has amassed an impressive record of 16 league titles and even made it to the finals of the African Continental Club Championship.

During the 1980s and 1990s, SC Villa achieved significant milestones by becoming the first Ugandan club to consecutively participate in continental club football and successfully transfer a player, Magid Musisi, directly to Europe.

However, the club encountered difficulties in ownership, governance, and business management, leading to a decline in both sporting achievements and financial performance.

In response to these challenges, the club’s founders opted to transfer ownership to the Villa Members Trust, a corporate entity comprising devoted SC Villa supporters who contribute through annual membership fees.

Despite the setbacks, SC Villa remains an active participant in the Ugandan Premier League and recently welcomed Dusan Stojanovic as the new club manager.

The ongoing 2023/24 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season is in its climax, with the top four teams – SC Villa, BUL, Vipers, and Kitara – separated by a mere three points. SC Villa currently leads the standings with 54 points, positioning them as the frontrunners for the championship.

A victory against NEC at Lugogo would secure SC Villa’s first league title in two decades, culminating in a total of 57 points. In the event of a draw, SC Villa’s title aspirations hinge on BUL, Vipers, and Kitara dropping points.

SC Villa must maintain at least a one-point lead over their competitors on the final day.
