Ugandan athlete Leonard Chemutai has scooped a gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the 23rd CAA Africa Athletics Senior Championships in Douala, Cameroon.
Chemutai’s remarkable performance saw him cross the finish line in a time of 8:21.29, showcasing his prowess and resilience on the world-class stage.
This triumphant gold medal adds to Uganda’s tally at the prestigious continental championships, with fellow Ugandan Tom Dradriga also securing a bronze medal in the 800m event.
The CAA African Athletics Senior Championships serve as the last Olympic Games qualifier for many athletes who missed out on the qualifying time and are proving to be a platform for Ugandan excellence.
Thirteen Ugandan athletes are seeking to secure their place at the 2024 Paris Olympics through their performances in Douala.
In other events featuring Ugandan participants on Day 3 of the events, Haron Adoli finished a commendable 5th in the 400m men’s final, while Shida Leni placed 7th in the 400m women’s final.
The championships, which began on June 21st, will continue until June 26th at the Stade de la Réunification in Douala, Cameroon.
Other countries participating in the championships include hosts Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Seychelles, Burundi, Somalia and Ethiopia to mention but a few.
