EURO 2024: Netherlands’ Second-Half Comeback Secures Semi-Final Spot

The Netherlands showcased their resilience by overturning a first-half deficit to secure a 2-1 quarter-final victory against Turkey on Saturday, July 6th, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

This hard-fought Netherlands win, the only game that didn’t go into extra time at this year’s Euro quarter-finals, sets up a semi-final showdown with England on Wednesday, July 10th, and marks the Dutch team’s sixth appearance in the European Championship semi-finals.

The game began with high intensity as the Netherlands applied early pressure. Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo were active, creating early opportunities, though neither could find the target.

Despite a bright start, the Dutch were unable to sustain their momentum in a scrappy first half, allowing Turkey to grow into the game.

Turkey’s persistence paid off in the 35th minute when Samet Akaydin headed home from close range, capitalising on a perfectly weighted cross from Arda Güler.

This was Akaydin’s first international goal, giving Turkey a crucial lead as they headed into halftime.

Ronald Koeman’s halftime adjustments proved pivotal for the Netherlands. The introduction of Wout Weghorst added a new dimension to their attack, stretching the Turkish defense and creating space.

As the Dutch pressure mounted, Stefan De Vrij found the equaliser in the 70th minute, nodding in from a Depay cross following a well-executed short corner.

Just six minutes later, the Dutch turned the game on its head. A dangerous low cross from Denzel Dumfries caused chaos in the Turkish box, leading to Mert Muldur inadvertently steering the ball into his own net under pressure from Gakpo.

This rapid turnaround left Turkey desperately chasing the game in the final minutes. They pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but the Dutch defense held firm.

Bart Verbruggen produced a stunning reaction save to deny Kerem Akturkoglu in stoppage time, ensuring the Netherlands’ passage to the semi-finals.

Turkey’s frustration boiled over as substitute Bertug Yildirim received a red card in the 96th minute for his conduct on the touchline.

This victory highlights the Netherlands’ determination and tactical flexibility, as they successfully navigated a tricky encounter to keep their Euro 2024 aspirations alive.

They now look ahead to a highly anticipated semi-final against England, while Turkey’s spirited campaign comes to an end.
