Argentina claimed its third consecutive major title with an extra-time victory over Colombia in the Copa América final, held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The 1-0 win, secured by Lautaro Martinez’s goal, brought Argentina its record 16th Copa América crown and ended Colombia’s 28-match unbeaten streak.

The match, however, was marred by chaotic crowd scenes. Kick-off was delayed for more than an hour due to thousands of fans without tickets attempting to forcibly enter the stadium.

This resulted in overcrowding and distressed fans, including women and children, being stuck outside the gates. Some fans even climbed the stadium walls in an attempt to gain entry.

Stadium officials reopened the gates briefly to prevent stampedes and ensure safety. Law enforcement and security personnel were deployed throughout the area.

Miami-Dade County officials expressed outrage over the unprecedented events and announced an investigation.

Lionel Messi, the Argentine captain, likely played his last international match. He left the game in the second half due to an ankle injury and was visibly emotional on the bench.

Despite the injury, Messi celebrated with his teammates after the final whistle, lifting the trophy amidst cheers from jubilant fans.

The chaotic scenes in Miami follow similar issues during Colombia’s semifinal win over Uruguay in Charlotte, North Carolina, where tempers flared and players clashed with fans.

These events raise concerns for FIFA, which has approved Hard Rock Stadium as a venue for the 2026 World Cup.
