Wushu, a martial art originating from China, has gained significant traction in Uganda since its introduction in 2009, with a formal establishment in 2010, sponsored by the Chinese embassy.

Four Ugandan athletes have already been trained in China and earned diplomas and recognition from the China Wushu Association.

Eddie Gombia, the club president who introduced kickboxing to Uganda, embraced Wushu and began with just four players.

“I started the sport with just four players and gradually recruited more participants. Today, these players represent Uganda in seminars and international competitions, such as the recent event in Kigali,” Gombia shared.

Wushu in Uganda has seen remarkable growth, expanding from four players to 16 clubs, each with at least 30 athletes.

The focus is now on preparing for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar where the sport will be tested as an Olympic sport.

Wushu Sports Uganda is fully registered with the National Council of Sports, achieving 50% of the required criteria and becoming one of the 51 recognized sports in Uganda. During their recent trip to Kigali, the federation sponsored 50% of their expenses.
