Backed by Belief: Joseph Aredo Reflects on his Penalty Triumph

In a thrilling finale at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, Uganda’s rugby team clinched fifth place in the Rugby Africa Cup, thanks to a decisive penalty from Joseph Aredo. The match, held on Sunday, July 28, was a nail-biting contest that saw both teams tied at 23-23 at the end of regular time and 31-31 after extra time, leading to a dramatic sudden death period. Aredo’s successful penalty secured a memorable victory for the hosts over Senegal.

In an exclusive interview on the Premier Sport show, Aredo shared his reflections on the game and his personal highlights. He revealed how the presence of his family and friends in the stands was a major source of inspiration. “Having my loved ones cheering me on really motivated me to give my best,” Aredo said.

The victory and his performance over the weekend have been a standout moment in his rugby career. Aredo, who has experienced many personal highs, considers this triumph and his crucial penalty as his top achievement. He praised the support of his teammates, particularly Captain Ivan Magomu, who, despite missing two penalties earlier in the game, placed his trust in Aredo to make the decisive shot.

“The trust and support from my teammates played a huge role in keeping me composed and focused,” Aredo explained. “Knowing they had my back reduced the pressure and helped me stay calm under the spotlight.”

Reflecting on the Rugby Africa Cup, Aredo noted valuable lessons learned from playing alongside experienced international players. These experiences have been instrumental in his growth as a player.

Looking ahead, Aredo is excited about his future plans. He aims to join Kobs as they prepare for the upcoming season, continuing his journey in the sport he is passionate about.
