The Arab Republic of Egypt will host the next African Games in 2027.
The decision was arrived at during the African Union Sports Council of ministers meeting at Movenpick Hotel in Accra Ghana on Saturday.
Only Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo had earlier expressed interest to host the next games before Congo withdrew to leave Egypt as the sole bidders.
According to the minister, the meeting among others also considered the report of experts from the African unions sports advisory Council headed by Ogwel, discussed need for all member states to invest in sports infrastructure and development of young African talents.
“Ghana also asked members to name Accra a sports city, which I supported. You could see the enormous investment they put in hosting the games this year, and I congratulate them for that. We also brought in a proposal to have joint hosts in order to reduce the burden of any member country that would want to host the games. For example, the East African block can hand in a joint bid. This proposal has been referred to the council of heads of state to make the fibak decision,” explained Ogwang, who has also led the cheers for Team Uganda at the ongoing games.
Ogwang says that there is a need to market the games to attract big sponsors.
Ethiopia and Congo have already expressed interest in hosting the subsequent 2031 games.
According to Ogwel, Egypt has the necessary and standard required facilities to host the next games after due delligence and physical inspection was done.
A total of 32 countries attended this one-day African Union Commission organised Forth Extraordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Youth, Culture and Sports (STC- YCS 4) on the margins of the 13th Edition of the African Games in Accra, Ghana.
