Ayub Kalule: Uganda’s Forgotten Boxing Champion

In Uganda’s boxing history books, Ayub Kalule’s name resonates as a symbol of triumph and resilience. His journey from being a top boxer to being forgotten paints a sad picture of the ups and downs of a life dedicated to sports.

Even though he achieved a lot in the boxing ring during the 1970s, Ayub Kalule now struggles with the silence surrounding his once-famous career. Dealing with sickness and poverty, his life today is very different from the excitement he felt representing Uganda on the world stage.

At 70 years old, Ayub Kalule is one of Uganda’s most successful boxing champions. His journey started in Denmark, where he trained and won 46 out of 50 fights. But life after boxing has been tough, especially after he moved to Kenya in 1993 and faced problems with his businesses.

Talking to NBS Sport, Ayub looked back on his life and said he finds comfort in his strong faith in God. He turns to fasting for hope and strength during hard times. Despite the difficulties, he still loves boxing and wants to inspire young athletes.

Kalule also dreams of building a boxing gym behind his home to help young boxers in his area. As Uganda’s boxing hero tries to keep his legacy alive, he hopes for support from others.
