Despite a setback in their final group stage match, the national U23 men’s basketball team, the Silverbacks, have clinched a spot in the All Africa Games playoffs.
The Silverbacks experienced a narrow defeat, with Burkina Faso edging them out 21-19. The loss means the Silverbacks finished second in Group C.
Burkina Faso emerged as the group leaders with victories in all their group-stage encounters. Trailing behind the Silverbacks were Togo, who managed to secure one win, and DR Congo, who unfortunately couldn’t notch a victory in any of their group-stage matches.
Meanwhile, it was a different tale for the Uganda U23 women’s basketball team. Despite a hard-fought effort, they were unable to progress from Group C, finishing in third place.
Their lone victory came against Benin, where they narrowly triumphed 16-15. However, losses to Togo and Nigeria dashed their hopes of advancing further in the competition.
Joining Uganda in the playoffs are Rwanda, the Central African Republic, Madagascar, hosts Ghana, Burkina Faso, Algeria, and Botswana.
With the stakes heightened, the Silverbacks will be aiming to overcome their recent defeat and make a strong push towards clinching the coveted gold in the upcoming matches.
