Uganda National Team on the Chase for the Top Prize at the All Africa Junior Golf Championship 2024

The All Africa Junior Golf Championship 2024, featuring 16 national teams, commenced with the flag-raising ceremony on April 22, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. South African time at the Benoni Country Club, the host of this continent-wide event for teenagers, encompassing boys and girls under the age of 18.

Organized and supported by the R&A, the All Africa Golf Confederation, and GolfRSA, this event is setting an exemplary pace for junior development.

Team Uganda, under the leadership of national team coach Flavia Namakula, comprises three girls: Keisha Kagoro, Winnie Musuya, and Rachael Natukunda. Rachael, based at Toro Club and Afriyea Golf Academy, is a rising star in golf who only began playing in 2020.

South Africa, Morocco, located in North Africa, and Kenya from the eastern part of the continent are leading the tournament, with respective gross scores of +5, +11, and +14 for the listed girls’ national teams. Meanwhile, Uganda is trailing but remains optimistic as players and coach are fully committed going into the second day of the tournament.

The Uganda girls will need to overturn a 24-stroke deficit on day two to remain competitive, keeping their sights on the bigger picture of either winning or securing a top-two finish, which qualifies the top two countries for the World Junior Championship in Japan later this year.

Team Uganda appears composed and prepared to challenge any opponent they encounter today. For those new to this event’s format, day one consists of team play, where the three players representing each nation submit their scores, with the two best scores being considered.

In the boys’ division of the event, South Africa, Zambia, and Kenya are leading the charge, with South Africa at -5, Zambia at +13, and Kenya at +15 as of day one (April 24, 2024).

Uganda’s representation in the boys’ category includes Brian Mande, Charles Jjunju, and Collin Matovu.

Furthermore, alongside the tournament, various clinics and workshops are being conducted to foster talent development and impart crucial skills to the young golfers. These initiatives, aimed at nurturing the next generation of golfing talent, highlight the holistic approach adopted by the organizers and stakeholders in promoting golf across the African continent.
