British boxing mourns the loss of Sherif Lawal, a promising young fighter who tragically died after collapsing during his professional debut match on Sunday night.
The 29-year-old Lawal was competing at the Harrow Leisure Centre in London when the incident occurred, according to match promoter Warren Boxing Management. The company expressed their deepest condolences to Lawal’s family and friends in a statement released on social media.
“We are devastated to confirm that Sherif Lawal tragically passed away following his fight,” the statement read. “Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, Sherif could not be revived.”
The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed Lawal’s passing on Monday, offering their support to those affected by this heartbreaking loss.
“The thoughts of everyone involved in British boxing are with Sherif’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Lawal’s death highlights the inherent risks associated with boxing, a full-contact combat sport. This tragedy follows similar incidents in recent years, including the 2019 death of American boxer Patrick Day after sustaining injuries during a Chicago match. Earlier that same year, Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev succumbed to injuries sustained in a Maryland fight.
This string of tragedies underscores the ongoing debate surrounding safety measures in professional boxing.
