On Thursday, May 30, 2024, a landmark agreement was signed between the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and the Ugandan government, represented by the National Council of Sports, marking a significant step forward in the preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The signing ceremony, witnessed by State Minister of Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, included the official handover of land titles and the signing of land transfer forms necessary for the construction of the new Hoima Stadium.
This event follows the Ugandan Parliament’s approval on May 16, 2024, of a budget amounting to Shs152 billion for the stadium’s construction. The funding, drawn from the Petroleum Fund, is part of a broader strategy to ensure Uganda is ready to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
Preparations for the stadium have been in motion for several months. In November 2023, the Inter-ministerial Committee overseeing AFCON preparations conducted an extensive inspection of the proposed stadium site in Hoima City.
This inspection also included the Kabalega International Airport, highlighting its importance in the comprehensive infrastructure plan for the tournament.
Summa International Construction Company Inc. of Türkiye is the contractor selected by the government to undertake the construction of the Stadium. They have been tasked to have the project ready before the deadline of 31st December 2025.
The construction of the Hoima City Stadium is a crucial element in Uganda’s efforts to deliver a successful AFCON 2027.
The new stadium is expected to meet international standards, providing a world-class venue for the tournament and fostering the development of sports in the region.
