Gareth Southgate has expressed optimism regarding Luke Shaw’s recovery from injury, suggesting the Manchester United left-back now has a “good chance” of making England’s Euro 2024 squad. Shaw, 28, has been sidelined with a muscle issue since mid-February and was initially considered a “long shot” for the tournament.
Despite Shaw’s injury-plagued season and a recent setback in May, Southgate included him in the 33-man training group, recognizing his importance to the team. Shaw is set to miss both warm-up friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland, but Southgate remains hopeful.
“He’s progressing very well,” Southgate told talkSPORT. “There’s still a bit to do before he can get on the pitch in a game situation, but we’re pleased with the work he’s doing with our physical performance team and our medics.”
Shaw, who scored in the Euro 2020 final, is the only specialist left-back in the expanded squad. Southgate must reduce the squad to 26 by Friday, and the expanded roster allows for some flexibility regarding injured players.
“We’ve got to make sure we’ve got enough cover,” Southgate said. “Clearly he’s a specialist left-back that’s an incredibly high-level player, so you’re more likely to take a chance on a player that’s been a regular starter.”
Shaw’s potential return is a significant boost for England, as is the progress of his Manchester United teammate, Harry Maguire. Maguire, who suffered a muscle issue in training, is on track to be fit for the Euros. Southgate indicated that Maguire is unlikely to play in the upcoming friendlies but is recovering well.
Anthony Gordon is also progressing but will miss Monday’s match at St James’ Park, where Kieran Trippier will captain England in place of Harry Kane, who has recovered from a back issue.
“Harry has trained all week,” Southgate said. “We feel we don’t need him to start the game tomorrow, but he can be involved in the game.”
Additionally, Jude Bellingham will join the squad later after helping Real Madrid win the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund.
