European Championship holders Italy have announced their final 26-man squad for Euro 2024, confirming that Ivan Provedel, Samuele Ricci, and Riccardo Orsolini have been cut.
Manager Luciano Spalletti initially named a 30-man provisional squad for the Coverciano training camp, but the squad was reduced following injuries to Inter Milan’s Francesco Acerbi and Atalanta BC’s Giorgio Scalvini.
Acerbi sustained a groin injury, and Scalvini suffered an ACL injury in Atalanta’s final Serie A game of the season. Federico Gatti from Juventus was called up to replace Acerbi, leaving Spalletti to work with a 29-man squad during the goalless friendly draw with Turkey.
All 24 nations competing at Euro 2024 had until June 7 to submit their final squads, and Italy made their announcement a day before the deadline. Lazio’s Ivan Provedel, Torino’s Samuele Ricci, and Bologna’s Riccardo Orsolini were the players who missed the cut.
Provedel, an uncapped 30-year-old goalkeeper, struggled with an ankle injury late in the 2023-24 season. Ricci, who has only two international caps, impressed for Torino last season but was not selected due to Spalletti’s preference for more experienced midfielders. Orsolini, despite scoring 10 goals in 33 Serie A games and starting in the friendly against Turkey, failed to make a significant impact and was subsequently excluded from the final squad.
Italy will play their final warm-up match against Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on June 9 before heading to Germany for Euro 2024.
The Azzurri, who won Euro 2020, will begin their Group B campaign against Albania at Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion on June 15, followed by matches against Spain on June 20 and Croatia on June 24.
