The Junior Gazelles secured a commanding victory over Tanzania with a final score of 103-48 to make it to the semifinals of the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers.
The game remained balanced in the first period, with both teams scoring 10 points each. However, Uganda quickly pulled away in the second period, outscoring Tanzania 29-7. This dominance continued through the third period, with Uganda adding 34 points to Tanzania’s 12, and concluded with a 30-19 run in the final period.
Uganda’s standout performance came from Resty Nanangwe, who scored 29 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and provided 5 assists, achieving an efficiency index of 28. Modesta Anyango also made a significant contribution with 22 points, 2 rebounds, and 8 assists, while Mia Belinda Alaba secured 9 rebounds and added 6 points.
For Tanzania, Nawasa Lazaro Lukumay was the top performer, contributing 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Maria Lupindu led the team in rebounds with 8, and Namsifu Kimera scored 11 points.
Uganda’s dominance was reflected in key statistics, with a field goal percentage of 34% compared to Tanzania’s 25%. The Junior Gazelles will face Tanzania again in the semifinals this Thursday at the MTN Arena in Lugogo.
