The Mutalaga Christmas Cup 2024 is set to commence following the official launch of its eighth edition. The tournament patron and proprietor, Frank Mutalaga Ssebanenya, formally launched the event by presenting the organizing committee with all the necessary equipment during a press conference held at Grand Imperial in Kampala on Thursday evening.
The tournament will kick off with the Community Shield match, where defending champions DC United will face runners-up Hot Star FC on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at Lweza Play Ground.
The winner will take home 1 million UGX and gold medals, while the runner-up will receive 500,000 UGX and silver medals. The group stage matches will start on Monday, July 8, 2024.
This year’s tournament features 80 teams divided into 16 groups, with five teams in each group. The first group stage matches in Group A will see Jesus FC (Seguku) play against Kanaaba UTD (Ndejje) at 2 PM, followed by St Mary’s FC (Katale) against Professor Buwembo FC (Makindye) at 4 PM.
The Mutalaga Christmas Cup has a rich history, with previous winners including Bunamwaya FC (2015), Abbas Tiper (2016), Kibalaza (2017), DC United (2018, 2023), Mayinja FC (2019), and South Africa (2022).
