Hugo Broos, head coach of the South African national football team, Bafana Bafana, has expressed mixed feelings about the outcome of the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 qualifiers draw.
South Africa has been placed in Group K, alongside Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan.
Broos, who recently guided South Africa to a third place finish at the last Africa Cup of Nations, acknowledged the challenging path ahead.
Since their historic 1996 victory, South Africa has struggled to assert its dominance on the continent. However, Broos, a former Cameroon coach who led the Indomitable Lions to their fifth continental crown, has seen a steady improvement in Bafana Bafana’s performance.
Regarding Uganda, Broos highlighted the team’s strength and the difficulty of playing against them.
“First of all, we have Uganda, and they are a very powerful team, very difficult to play against. We have to achieve our best level against them,” Broos said.
Congo, another team in Group K, is seen by Broos as a technically skilled side, posing significant threats, especially when playing at home.
“Secondly, we have Congo, and they are more of a technical team, very dangerous when they play at home. So there, again, we need a very good performance,” he added.
South Sudan, the final team in the group, remains an enigma for Broos. He stressed the importance of thorough analysis to avoid losing crucial points against them.
“Lastly, we have South Sudan, and for me, they are a completely unknown quantity. It will be very important to have a good analysis of that opponent so that we do not lose too many points against them because it can be very important,” concluded the coach.
The qualifiers for the AFCON 2025 will take place between September and November 2024, with the top two teams from each group, excluding Group B, securing their spots in the tournament scheduled for December 2025 to January 2026 in Morocco.
