The KIU Rangers launched their 2024 NBL playoffs campaign with a commanding 80-47 victory over the Miracle Ravens in Game 1 at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Wednesday.

The Rangers displayed dominance from the outset, leading 46-22 at halftime and extending their advantage to 69-36 by the end of the third quarter.

Mary Moses Amaniyo was the game’s top scorer with 15 points, but it was captain Ines Kanyamuneza who stole the spotlight.

Kanyamuneza’s stellar performance, which included 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists, earned her the player of the game accolade. Sharon Kirabo also made a significant impact, recording a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The game also marked the return of Fildauce Namulema to the starting lineup. Namulema contributed 10 points, two rebounds, and three assists, showcasing her importance to the team’s dynamics.

Rangers’ coach Julius Lutwama expressed his excitement over the team’s strong start.

“It’s quite exciting to begin the playoffs with such momentum. It was a great game for us, especially considering that we won against a team like Miracle Ravens by a margin of over 30 points,” he said.

Looking ahead to Game 2, he emphasized the need for composure and focus.

Captain Kanyamuneza attributed the victory to the team’s cohesion and purpose.

“I think what saw us win with such a margin was playing as a team and also playing with a reason. The reason is to ease our path to the next level,” she remarked.

The Rangers will aim to secure their place in the semifinals with a win in Game 2, scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
