Mawanda Frank of Kololo Boxing Club is poised to make his debut in the featherweight category during week five of the Uganda Boxing Champions League Season Three.
He is scheduled to face the 2022 Africa Boxing Championship bronze medalist, Kyobe Jonathan, on July 20th at the NCS Arena in Lugogo.
Speaking to NBS Sport, Mawanda discussed his preparation and confidence in his new weight class.
“This will be my first match in the ring for Season Three. I have been preparing since the national open because I knew that opponents like Kyobe Jonathan would come my way. This fight doesn’t come as a surprise; I knew it was coming and have been praying for this opportunity,” Mawanda stated.
Addressing his opponent directly, Mawanda added, “We are putting aside our friendship for this match. Be ready for your loss because I am determined to give it to you however you want it.”
Mawanda also spoke about his decision to move from light middleweight to featherweight, a change made on the advice of his coaches.
“I changed weight classes because my coaches sat me down and advised me to compete in featherweight. I initially wanted to stay in light middleweight, but they convinced me that I would perform better in featherweight. I listened, and that’s why I’m here,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Mawanda shared his ambitions, saying, “I aim to be the number one featherweight and represent my country. Once I achieve that, I plan to contest for the local council in my village, Kalewa.”
