The popular Kids of Africa Run returns for its 10th edition on September 8th, 2024, aiming to raise awareness about menstrual health and empower girls to stay in school.

The event, held at Kids Pioneer School in Entebbe, was announced on Tuesday at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

This year marks another collaboration between I&M Bank Uganda and Kids of Africa for the decade-long running event.

Participants can choose from 5km, 10km, and 21km categories, with top performers receiving prizes in each.

Building on their 2022 sponsorship, I&M Bank has significantly boosted their support for the 10th edition with a Shs 5 million contribution.

The bank has also pledged to have a significant number of staff participate in the run and has committed to continued support for next year’s event.

“We at I&M Bank are proud to once again support the Kids of Africa Run,” said Racheal Kulanyi, the bank’s Communications and Outreach Officer.

“We’re even more thrilled to be backing such a vital cause: improving access to reusable sanitary pads and ensuring girls can stay in school. Our participation reflects our dedication to giving back to the community and promoting gender equality. By joining the run and raising awareness, we hope to contribute to meaningful change and inspire others to take action as well.”

Each year, the proceeds from the run are directed towards a specific sanitation project within the local community.

This year’s focus is on creating awareness and knowledge about reusable sanitary pads to keep girls in school.

Funds raised will be directed to Days for Girls, an NGO working to eliminate the stigma and limitations associated with menstruation.

Their efforts aim to improve health, education, and livelihoods for women and girls.

“This event goes beyond just fundraising; it’s a step towards a brighter future for countless young girls,” said Esbern Budolfsen, the Deputy National Director of Kids of Africa.

“By highlighting reusable sanitary pads, we’re addressing a barrier that hinders girls from staying in school and reaching their full potential. Our goal is to create lasting change and ensure every girl has the opportunity to succeed. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and contribute to the broader fight for gender equality.”

Budolfsen, who also serves as the course director, commended Ugandans for embracing runs with a purpose.

“This culture is fantastic, and of course, we encourage everyone to participate in this event. This year, we anticipate over 1,000 runners to take part. The track is ready and in excellent condition for the race.”

Registration for the run is Shs 25,000 per person. Participants can register at various locations, including Kids of Africa in Bwerenga village, Entebbe, Total Namasuba 2 (Entebbe Road), Katabi Town Council Mayor’s office, Divine Saloon at the Madison Building in Kawuku, and Abayita Ababiri branches.

Online registration is also available at www.kidsofafrica-run.com

Adding to the excitement, this year’s run will culminate with performances by top DJs and a headline act by music sensation Azawi.

Last year’s edition saw approximately 1,000 participants, and the proceeds were used to construct modern toilets at both Kitala Primary School and St. Paul Bulaga Primary School in Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District.
