The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa believes that golf has more potential to attract big investors in the country on top of being a massive tourism attraction.
Tayebwa, an amateur golfer himself, was officially teeing off the 2024 ABSA Bank Uganda golf Open Pro-Am on Tuesday at the Entebbe golf club.
“As a government official, I want to look at it from the tourism aspect. I am looking forward to when we are hosting DP World and we are able to host big people from all over the world,” he said.
“Research shows that golfers are the biggest spenders. So, it would support tourism very much,” added Tayebwa, who is happy with the level at which golf is growing.
The 2024 ABSA Bank Uganda golf Open Pro-Am championship attracted over 200 players including 57 professionals and 171 amateurs.
“Golf is a sport that gives opportunity for people to network, stay healthy and it is a property that we believe resonates very well with our objective of being a force for good,” remarked ABSA Bank Uganda managing director Mumba Kalifungwa, whose bank sponsored the Pro-Am championship with Shs270m.
From this year’s Pro-Am event, 10 players of five amateurs and five professionals were selected to represent Uganda in the 2025 Magical Kenya Open.
