In a nail biting qualifying session for the 2024 Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix, Max Verstappen defied the odds to snatch pole position from George Russell by a mere half a tenth of a second.
This marks Verstappen’s first pole position since the Austrian Grand Prix back in July, putting an end to a 12-race dry spell.
The battle for pole was a tense affair, with Verstappen and Russell emerging as the clear favorites in the final runs.
While Russell failed to improve on his final attempt, Verstappen managed to squeeze out just enough extra speed to claim the top spot.
Lando Norris and the breakout star Oscar Piastri will share the second row, with Lewis Hamilton settling for a somewhat disappointing sixth place behind the two Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Fernando Alonso continues to impress in his veteran season, starting from eighth.
Kevin Magnussen put in a strong performance to round out the top 10, while his teammate Sergio Perez narrowly scraped into Q3 and ended up a worrying second behind Verstappen.
The American Haas team, still searching for its first points of the season, had a mixed bag in qualifying. Zhou Guanyu displayed promise by reaching Q2, while Nico Hulkenberg, who scored points in the sprint race yesterday, suffered a shock early exit due to a battery issue.
The biggest question mark surrounding the qualifying session is the upcoming stewards’ investigation into Verstappen.
The details of the investigation remain undisclosed, but it casts a shadow over Verstappen’s hard-earned pole position.
