The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) contingent has returned home after a stellar performance at the recently concluded Africa Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria.
The games, which ran from November 18th to 30th, saw Ugandan athletes bag a total of nine medals – four gold, four silver, and one bronze.
The closing ceremony, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on November 30th, was a grand affair graced by His Excellency Kashim Shettima, Vice President of Nigeria.
In his address, H.E. Shettima commended the athletes for their role in fostering African unity and camaraderie through sports.
The UPDF athletes showcased exceptional talent across various disciplines.
Privates Kugonza Joyce, Amoko Innocent, Namutebi Erina, and Ocan James emerged victorious in their respective boxing categories, claiming gold medals for Uganda.
In athletics, Privates Cheptoyek Ruth and Chemutai Leonard secured silver medals, while Sergeant Chebet Emily’s bronze medal in another category capped off a remarkable performance for the Ugandan contingent.
Boxers Privates Jopyem James and Jamidali Adam also impressed, clinching silver medals.
The success comes at an opportune time as Uganda gears up to co-host major continental football tournaments – the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.
