Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has underscored the Harambee Stars’ preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 as a key focus as the team competes in the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar.
The Harambee Stars have shown promising form, opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso before defeating Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars 2-0 to top their group.
Despite the strong start, Hussein emphasized that the Mapinduzi Cup is part of a broader strategy to enhance the team’s competitiveness on the continental stage, including CHAN 2024 and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“We are pleased with the quality the team has shown so far in Zanzibar, but consistency is the real challenge,” Hussein said. “Our primary focus remains building a team capable of delivering strong performances at CHAN 2024 and later AFCON 2027. Sustaining this momentum requires proper preparation and long-term planning.”
The Harambee Stars currently lead their group with four points, level with Burkina Faso but ahead on goal difference.
Zanzibar is third with three points, while Tanzania remains without a point. The team’s next challenge is a decisive group-stage clash against Zanzibar Heroes on January 10 at Gombani Stadium, Pemba Island.
Hussein called on Kenyans to remain patient and supportive as the team works toward its goals, acknowledging the progress made under the current leadership.
“We are encouraged by the strides this team is making. They are beginning to take shape, and we are optimistic about their chances in Zanzibar and beyond,” he said. “Our aim is to reach the Mapinduzi Cup final and win the trophy, which would set the tone for a successful CHAN campaign.”
Kenya alongside Uganda and Tanzania will co-host the CHAN 2024 tournament in February this year.
