Notable Changes as Gazelles Announce Squad for FIBA Zone V Qualifiers

The Uganda Gazelles have unveiled their 15-player squad for the FIBA Zone V Qualifiers, bringing both excitement and questions about notable omissions from the roster.

The team is headlined by stars like Jane Asinde, Hope Akello, and Shakira Nanvubya, but the absence of experienced players such as Ritah Imanishimwe, Flavia Oketcho, and Brenda Ekone has sparked significant discussion.

These veterans played pivotal roles in the 2023 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers, with their leadership and consistency contributing to the team’s success.

Another significant absence is Jannon Otto, the talented small forward who emerged as the top scorer at the 2023 FIBA AfroBasket tournament.

Otto’s outstanding performances were a testament to her skill and value to the team, leaving fans wondering why she is not part of the current squad.

Speaking to NBS Sport, Head Coach Nicholas Natuhereza shed light on the changes, emphasizing that some players are unavailable due to personal commitments and the need to transition new talent into the squad.

“It’s unfortunate not to have players like Ritah, Flavia, Brenda, and Jannon with us for this campaign. They’ve been instrumental in the Gazelles’ journey, but this is also an opportunity for others to step up and make their mark,” Natuhereza explained.

“We believe in this squad and their ability to perform at the highest level,” he added.

Announced Players:

1. Jane Asinde
2. Hope Akello
3. Paige Robinson
4. Shakira Nanvubya
5. Perus Nyamwenge
6. Sheila Lamunu
7. Maxine Anyango
8. Jamilah Nansikombi
9. Agatha Kamwada
10. Zoe Atek
11. Sarah Namale
12. Mellisa Akullo
13. Sharon Kirabo
14. Becky Longom
15. Claire Lamunu

The new-look Gazelles feature rising stars like Sarah Namale, Zoe Atek, and Maxine Anyango, alongside the ever-reliable Claire Lamunu, who bring fresh energy to the team.

This blend of youth and experience is expected to form a solid foundation for their quest to dominate the Zone V Qualifiers.

The technical bench, comprising assistant coach Julius Lutwama and video analyst Ben Komakech, will play a critical role in guiding the Gazelles through challenging fixtures against regional powerhouses such as Kenya and Rwanda.

While the absence of key veterans may be felt, the Gazelles are confident that their new roster is up to the task.

The qualifiers offer a chance for emerging players to rise to the occasion and help Uganda secure its spot on the continental basketball stage for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers.
