Coach Natuhereza Optimistic as Gazelles’ Preparations Take Shape

Uganda Gazelles head coach Nicholas Natuhereza has expressed optimism about the team’s preparations for the upcoming FIBA Zone V Qualifiers.

Speaking during Friday’s training session, Natuhereza highlighted the steady progress his squad has made in adapting to tactical demands, improving fitness, and integrating new talent into the fold.

“We broke down our offense into small parts to build it piece by piece, and we have made progress,” Natuhereza explained.

As the qualifiers draw closer, physical conditioning remains a critical focus for the Gazelles.

Natuhereza acknowledged the players’ strides in reaching peak physical form but emphasized the need for continued effort.

“The girls are getting better in terms of conditioning, and we’ll keep working slowly to get into peak condition,” he said.

The technical team, led by Natuhereza, is also using the remaining days to finalize the team’s game plan.

“By next week, we shall have a good idea of how we want to play in the championship,” he added.

With several veteran players unavailable due to work commitments, the Gazelles have turned to young and rising talent to fill the void.

Natuhereza praised the newcomers for their ability to adapt and contribute during practice sessions.

“Some players couldn’t make it to the team because of work commitments, and that’s why we brought in some young blood. From the evidence of these practice sessions, they are doing well,” he noted.

The squad now features a mix of seasoned leaders like Jane Asinde and Hope Akello, alongside promising talents such as Sarah Namale and Maxine Anyango.

The blend of experience and youth is expected to provide the team with both stability and fresh energy as they aim to secure a spot in the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket.
