The Uganda Gazelles have received a major boost ahead of the FIBA Zone V Qualifiers with the arrival of Jamila Nansikombi, one of five expected overseas-based players.

The experienced guard rejoined the national team after a six-year absence while playing in the United States, bringing added firepower to Uganda’s squad.

Head coach Nicholas Natuhereza welcomed Nansikombi’s addition, emphasizing the value she brings to the team. “Today we received Jamila. She has the experience and exposure and gives us the firepower we need as a team,” he said.

With her versatility and scoring ability, Nansikombi is expected to play a key role in the qualifiers.

With just days to go before the tournament, the Gazelles are working against the clock to finalize their roster and tactical approach.

Natuhereza acknowledged the challenge of integrating returning players into the system but remained optimistic about Nansikombi’s ability to adjust quickly.

“We hope that she catches up with what the team has been doing in training quickly so that she is ready when the games start,” he noted.

“The technical team is right now trying to figure out the final 12 members of the squad while also focusing on different game situations and preparing for them.”

The coaching staff is also studying Uganda’s opponents, conducting scouting and analysis to fine-tune their strategy.

“We are also preparing for our opponents. We are doing a bit of scouting and analysis to understand them,” Natuhereza added. “We are in ‘injury time’ in terms of preparations, and I hope we make the best of it.”

For Nansikombi, returning to the Gazelles is a proud moment. The guard is determined to meet the high standards set within the squad.

“Being on the team is always a blessing, and I am excited to be part of this squad,” she said. “The standards have been set, and I am trying to beat those standards and not give anything less than what is required of me.”

Her arrival bolsters the team as they aim to secure qualification for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket. The tournament is set to start on Monday February 3rd in Egypt.
