The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has announced the postponement of all rugby matches scheduled for February 15, 2025, following the tragic passing of Kayondo Ronnie, a player for Kampani Eagles RFC.
The decision, made in consultation with club leadership and key stakeholders, allows the rugby fraternity two weeks to mourn the young athlete.
Kayondo Ronnie succumbed to injuries sustained during a Nile Special Rugby Premiership match against Buffaloes Rugby Club on February 8 at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
Despite undergoing surgery at Kampala Hospital, he passed away on February 9, sending shockwaves through the rugby community.
In a statement issued by URU Hon. Secretary Peter Odong, the union expressed its deep sorrow and appreciation for the overwhelming support from the rugby family.
“In consideration of the shock and dismay that this has caused the entire rugby fraternity, and in the spirit of solidarity, the Uganda Rugby Union has resolved to reschedule all matches,” the statement read.
The affected fixtures, including those in the Nile Special Rugby Premiership, Reserve Premiership, Women’s Premiership, and Regional Championship, have been moved to February 22, 2025.
Odong also extended gratitude to the medical teams, clubs, and supporters for their unity in this difficult time, as well as to those traveling to pay their final respects to Kayondo.
The rugby community will continue to celebrate Kayondo’s life in various activities across the country, with tributes pouring in for the talented player whose career was tragically cut short.
