Fresh off captaining Uganda’s national women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, to victory in the FIBA AfroBasket Zone V tournament, Jane Asinde has secured a move to Spain’s top flight.
The 25-year-old forward has signed with Ensino Lugo, a club competing in the Spanish First Division.
Ensino Lugo confirmed Asinde’s arrival via their official X account, stating, “Jane Asinde ya es nueva jugadora del Durán Maquinaria Ensino !! !! !! Bienvenida a Lugo @JaneAsinde,” which translates to, “Jane Asinde is now a new player for Durán Maquinaria Ensino! Welcome to Lugo @JaneAsinde.”
The move marks another significant step in Asinde’s career, as she transitions from Henan Phoenix in China to European basketball.
Her impact in international competition has been undeniable, particularly in the recently concluded AfroBasket qualifiers, where she earned MVP honors after averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Before her stint in China, Asinde was instrumental in leading JKL Lady Dolphins to their fourth National Women’s Basketball Championship title in the NBL playoffs last year.
Her dominance on both ends of the floor has now earned her a spot in one of Spain’s top basketball leagues.
Ensino Lugo, founded in 1980, has been competing in Spain’s first division since 2018, having previously featured in the league between 1995 and 2007.
Based in Lugo, Galicia, the club boasts a Spanish Second Division title, which they won in 2018 to secure promotion to the top tier.
Asinde is set to travel to Spain to join her new team and could make her debut as early as this Sunday when Ensino Lugo face Gran Canaria.
