Ugandan long-distance star Joshua Cheptegei has arrived in Japan and is set to make his mark on the road as he lines up for the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday, March 2.
The two-time Olympic champion, best known for his dominance on the track in the 5,000m and 10,000m, is seeking his first major marathon victory since transitioning to road racing last year.
Cheptegei, the world record holder in both the 5,000m and 10,000m, will be one of the key challengers in Tokyo, aiming to upstage defending champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya.
The Ugandan’s presence adds intrigue to the year’s first World Marathon Major, as fans eagerly anticipate how his endurance and speed will translate over the grueling 42.2km distance.
Tokyo will be a crucial test for Cheptegei, who has set his sights on mastering the marathon ahead of the World Athletics Championships, which will also be held in the Japanese capital later this year.
While his marathon experience remains limited, his track credentials and ability to control races at a high pace make him a formidable contender.
The elite field in Tokyo will see 169 top runners competing alongside a broader field of 38,000 participants. The race will begin at the Tokyo Metropolitan Building and conclude at Tokyo Station, offering a scenic but challenging route for all competitors.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Sutume Asefa Kebede will defend her title against strong opposition from Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru and Brigid Kosgei. British marathon legend Paula Radcliffe is also set to make a guest appearance, adding star power to the event.
As Cheptegei continues his transition from track to marathon racing, all eyes will be on his performance in Tokyo, where he hopes to take a significant step toward marathon greatness.
