The Uganda Squash Rackets Association (USRA) has taken a significant step toward advancing the sport in the country following a high-level engagement with Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) President, Dr. Donald Rukare.
The meeting, held after the successful conclusion of the Uganda Squash Rackets Open 2025, focused on strategic initiatives to enhance squash at all levels.
Also in attendance was Lucky Mlilo, President of the Squash Federation of Africa, who shared insights on how Uganda can strengthen its presence on the regional and continental squash scene.
Discussions centered on key areas such as securing sponsorships, grassroots development, facility upgrades, and improving player training structures.
USRA leadership emphasized the need to make squash more accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. They outlined plans for structured training programs, talent identification, and increasing public awareness to boost participation in the sport.
A major takeaway from the discussions was the importance of forging strong partnerships with corporate sponsors and stakeholders to secure funding for training, tournaments, and infrastructure development.
In line with these efforts, USRA is scheduled to meet with the National Council of Sports (NCS) to explore avenues for government support. Talks will focus on integrating squash into the national sports agenda, improving facilities in schools and communities, and ensuring sustainable funding for the sport’s growth.
Expanding squash beyond Kampala remains a key priority, with plans underway to set up regional training centers, introduce school-based programs, and increase national tournaments to expose young players to competitive environments.
USRA officials expressed optimism about the future of the sport.
“We are committed to making squash one of the fastest-growing sports in Uganda. By working with key stakeholders like UOC and NCS, we believe we can achieve significant progress in the coming years,” said USRA President Tamwesigire John Bosco Ahimbisibwe.
With these initiatives in motion, Uganda’s squash community is set for a new era of growth, with stronger institutional support and broader participation expected to propel the sport to new heights.
