Angels Basketball Club is set to compete in the 2025 National Basketball League (NBL) women’s division after reportedly replacing Our Savior Banyabo, who will not take part despite earning promotion as the 2024 FUBA Division One champions.

Our Savior Banyabo secured a place in the top flight after winning the Division One title last season.

However, according to sports journalist Avitus Ngabirano, the team has opted out of the NBL, with financial constraints believed to be a key factor, though an official explanation has yet to be provided.

Their withdrawal has paved the way for Angels, who finished third in Division One, to take up their slot in the women’s league.

The situation remains unclear for the men’s side, Our Savior, who were put up for sale in late 2024 due to financial difficulties faced by their key funders, Kelly Martin and John Paul Komakech.

The club’s future remains uncertain as no official confirmation has been made regarding a buyer or whether they will participate in the upcoming season.

Banyabo, the women’s team, was primarily financed by Halima Mukisa, wife of Kelly Martin, and appears to have faced similar financial struggles.

The team reportedly had limited resources even during the playoffs, training at Makerere University using only half the court.

With the NBL set to tip off on March 21, players and coaches from Banyabo have been advised to seek opportunities elsewhere, and some have already secured new teams.
