Sommet Basketball Club have officially secured a place in the National Basketball League (NBL) after completing an acquisition deal for Our Saviour’s slot.
The development was confirmed in an official statement released by Sommet on Wednesday, March 5, marking a significant step for the club, which previously competed in the lower division.
“We are thrilled to announce that after successful discussions with Our Saviour Basketball Club, Sommet Basketball Club will be stepping in to take their place in the National Basketball League starting this upcoming season,” read part of the statement.
Sommet’s arrival in the top tier comes despite their elimination by Uganda Martyrs University Flames in the 2024 FUBA Division One quarter-finals.
With Our Saviour opting to sell their place in the league, Sommet saw an opportunity to fast-track their ascent to the elite competition.
In the statement, Sommet emphasized that this move aligns with their long-term vision of growth and community engagement.
“We believe that this transformation will foster a deeper connection with our supporters and lay the groundwork for even greater achievements in the years ahead,” the club noted.
The development comes at the time when Angels Basketball Club is set to feature in the 2025 season after reportedly taking over the slot of Our Saviour Banyabo, the female wing of Our Saviour, who will not participate despite earning promotion as the 2024 FUBA Division One champions.
Our Saviour Banyabo secured a place in the top flight after winning the Division One title last season, but according to reports, the team has opted out, with financial constraints believed to be a major factor.
