In a bid to strengthen the foundation of school sports in Uganda, a high-level meeting was held on Monday, March 10, 2025, at Bulange, Mengo.
Officials from the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA), and the Buganda Kingdom convened to discuss a shared vision for the future of youth sports.
The discussions, led by prominent figures in the realm of education and sports, focused on harmonizing regulations, fostering capacity building, and expanding student participation at all levels.
The delegation from USSSA was headed by Emeritus Okanya Patrick and CEO Mugisha Christopher Banage, while UPSSA was represented by its President, Bwambale George William.
The Buganda Kingdom’s Minister of Sports, Youth, and Arts, Owek. Serwanga Robert Salongo graciously hosted the meeting.
Owek. Serwanga Robert Salongo emphasized the Kingdom’s dedication to promoting sports, starting from school-level participation to prestigious events like the Bika (Clan) Football Tournament and the Masaza Cup.
_”Working together ensures we nurture talent across all levels,”_ remarked Owek. Serwanga, highlighting other sports disciplines such as netball, omweso, golf, and cycling, which are integral to Buganda’s cultural celebrations.
USSSA CEO Mugisha Christopher Banage echoed this enthusiasm, underscoring the association’s dual role in both identifying talent and maximizing student involvement. _”From zonal to international levels, we are committed to creating more opportunities for learners.”_
UPSSA President Bwambale George William described the meeting as a historic moment, reflecting on the collective potential to enhance primary school sports across Uganda.
As part of the collaboration, it was announced that the Buganda Schools Competition will be held from March 13 to 16, 2025, at Kawanda Secondary School.
The event aims to further showcase and develop young talent, reinforcing the spirit of teamwork between the associations and the Kingdom.
